Development of artistic movements III (avant-garde) 4) Development of artistic movements IV (modernity to the present state) 5) Mechanical and electronic moving image (invention of photography and the sewing machine; sequential and simultaneous recording) 6. Pre-cinematography (the system of cinema and its standrady in socio-cultural definition) 7. Theories of the artistic avant-garde (categories of the avant-garde; multiparadigmatic approaches; the cinematic avant-garde) 8. Abstraction of the moving image (futurimus; absolute film; pure film; structural film) 9. Moving image performance (light games; colour pianos; synaesthesia; VJing) 10. Moving image installation (kineticism; self-referential installation; television and gallery production) 11. Moving image object (film sculpture and object; still image) 12. Post-cinematography (films, museums, mutations) 13. The concept of appropriation of film and video (cultural appropriation; collage; found footage) Key artists featured include A. Hackenschmied and M. Deren, Len Lye, Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage, Andy Warhol, Woody and Steina Vasulka.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to present the development of experimental and avant-garde cinema within the broader framework of technological and stylistic changes since the invention of the cinematograph. In particular, the major figures and their groundbreaking works will be examined, as well as the generic, aesthetic and conceptual background of other artistic disciplines intertwined with the moving image in unilateral or mutual influence.
Students are able to describe the technological aspect of movies. Students are able to compare and interpret historical periods of avant-garde film, experimental film and videoart. Students can evaluate the exaples from sontemporary film, gallery and archival practise.
