Successful completion of this course will enable students to navigate the basic academic tasks that are key to successfully completing their studies. Students are guided toward independent work and the acquisition of knowledge through research practice. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be equipped with the tools needed to prepare and write an academic text. They will gain a theoretical understanding of the stages involved in working on a text, from topic selection to final proofreading and publication options (with an emphasis on the humanities). Students will apply all essential stages of text creation through practical assignments. Active participation is expected, including the presentation of a paper (a research project of up to 5 pages) followed by a discussion among students regarding the content, methodology, and formal aspects of the presented text. Main Thematic Areas: 1. Scholarly Work: Characteristics and Requirements. Genres of scholarly writinganalytical essay, compilation, comparison, review, survey article, scholarly essay, theoretical essay. 2. Sections of a scholarly text, structure of the work, editorial guidelines. 3. Style of scholarly text, subject-specific terminology. 4. Sources and literature; methods of citation. The ČSN ISO 690 bibliographic standard. Creation and function of footnotes and endnotes. Citation ethics. 5. Basic academic literature in the field; academic journals. 6. Electronic information sources: a basic overview. 7. Electronic information sources for film and theater studies. 8. Library and archival institutions in the Czech Republic relevant to film and theater studies; working with archival materials. 9. How to manage the writing process. Procedures and strategies for writing an academic text. Work plan; organizing work on the text. 10. Basic research methodsaesthetic, industrial, technological, and social history. Course Objectives: - The ability to master the basic steps involved in conducting a research project and to write a standard academic text at the level of a scholarly article. Learning Outcomes: - Mastery of the procedures for writing an academic text - Academic writing skills: topic selection, heuristics and evaluation of existing sources on the topic, formulation of hypotheses and research questions, time management when working on an academic text, proper formatting, and linguistic accuracy of the academic text Skills to be acquired: information retrieval, use of scientific databases, critical thinking, text analysis, data and source collection, data management, formulating hypotheses and research questions, and choosing a methodology. The learning outcomes from this course can be applied when writing the course assignment for the course Seminární práce (KDU/SP).
