Learning outcomes
|
This full-semester seminar focuses on the reflection upon and analysis of diverse bodily identities in contemporary body-based arts (primarily dance, performance art, physical and non-verbal theatre, and contemporary circus). The central focus of the exploration is the relationship between the individual and the body, through which, within the artistic spectrum, the individual thematises and discusses their own existential experience and perception of the lived world, whilst simultaneously presenting the audience with what are often the most pressing issues of our time. The course will be based on viewing video recordings or our own personal reception of selected works; it will draw on the existing, multi-layered literature on the issues we are reflecting upon; and, above all, it will be constantly shaped and transformed by our shared active discussion during each session.
By the end of this course, students will: - have gained an understanding of specific aspects of contemporary body-based arts, along with the ability to reflect upon and analyse them in a relevant manner - have gained a more detailed understanding, through specific examples, of current theoretical interpretations of the issues under investigation - be able to use appropriate terminology and concepts relating to the body and physicality, identities, and body-based arts in general

Prerequisites
|
The course does not require any particular predispositions. The key criteria for participation and successful completion of the course are a personal interest in those art forms centred on the human body, and a willingness to actively discuss one's knowledge and experiences with others. We recommend that, as a direct follow-up to this course, you attend thematically relevant productions as part of the Divadelní Flora international theatre festival programme.

Student performance, Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary)
Regular attendance at lessons (maximum 25 per cent absence), being well-prepared and VERY active participation in discussions. Thorough preparation and presentation of the chosen topic.
