Learning outcomes
Community Radio and Podcasting In the Spring Semester 2025/26, the course is taught by Andrea Hanáčková. The course focuses on community radio with a particular emphasis on European student radio stations, their networks, and European community media organizations (e.g. European School Radio, IAMCR, ECREA) as initiatives connecting student radio and podcasting across Europe and fostering media literacy, digital skills, and international cooperation. The aim of the course is to introduce the main characteristics and functions of community radio as a media actor - its mission, participatory nature, governance structure, and its role within the broader media landscape. We will analyze the functioning of networks and communities of community media in Europe and, through case studies (including practical experience with the student radio UP AIR at Palacký University in Olomouc and other student radio stations), apply theoretical knowledge to real media practice and formulate strategies for the development and internationalization of UP AIR student radio. Conceived as a combination of lectures and seminars, the course will also include dramaturgical discussions on the contemporary form of radio, intensive feedback on newly created programmes, and the articulation of visions for international cooperation with domestic and foreign partner stations.
