Course content
The lecture follows in selected chapters puppet theatre as a specific type of theatre from its birth to its current form - due to the scope of the material, the teaching will include only selected thematic areas. Other topics, listed in the overview of thematic areas, will be the subject of self-study from the required and recommended literature. 1: How we perceive contemporary puppet theatre and what forms this specific type of theatre takes in the 21st century. 2. Definition of the terms puppet and puppet theatre The puppet in the theatre system, the taxonomy of the puppet, the changing perception of the puppet puppet theatre as a separate art form of the subject theatre, typology of puppets and animation, puppet and the relationship with the animator. 3. From ritual to the sources of puppet theatre Ritual roots of the puppet, the puppet as a magical object, animation elements in Asian and African cultures. 4. The development of puppet theatre in the European context and the formation of European puppet theatre theory From Romanticism to the great theatrical reform, the formation of a distinctive aesthetic of puppet theatre. 5. Tendencies of contemporary European puppet theatre Alternative object theatre in the second half of the 20th century (Bread and Puppet, Peter Schumann, Philippe Genty, Duda Paiva, etc.). 6. Sources of Czech puppet theatre - periodisation Foreign travelling companies, folk puppeteers and their repertoire, puppet families. Dramatics of the national revival, original texts. 7. Family Puppet Theatre and the Era of Community Theatre The phenomenon of family theatres, puppet theatre, puppet theatre promoter Jindřich Veselý, the UNIMA organization and the magazine Puppeteer. 8. The emergence of the first professional troupes, puppet theatre and the avant-garde Efforts at professionalisation (Artistic Puppet Scene, Puppet Theatre of the Ferial Settlements, Josef Skupa, Jiří Trnka and the Wooden Theatre, etc.). 9. The formation of puppet theatre theory in the Czech context Prague Linguistic Circle, structuralist conception of theatre. The following theoretical lineage (Erik Kolár, Miroslav Česal, Jan Císař, Karel Makonj, Petr Pavlovský, etc.). 10. Czech professional puppet theatre and its form in the second half of the 20th century The professional network of puppet theatres, the Central Puppet Theatre, the differentiation of theatres in the 1960s. The differentiation of puppet theatres in the 1960s, profile scenes and personalities. 11. Puppet theatre in the 21st century Transformation of the professional network, independent scene, genre and species permeability, street Festivals and shows. 12. Conclusion of the course with a joint discussion on contemporary puppet theatre issues.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the lecture is to present the theoretical definition of puppet theatre in the historical context of Czech and European theatre, to outline the historical development of Czech puppet theatre in its individual tendencies against the background of European developments, and to introduce the significant personalities and the current state of Czech puppet theatre by the example of the work of profile companies in the second half of the 20th century.
The student knows the basic prerequisites for the emergence of puppet theatre as a distinct art form, can name the individual stages of its development and define the development of theoretical concepts in the European and Czech historical context. The student is familiar with the typology of puppets and the changes in the aesthetic principles of puppet theatre, including contemporary puppet theatre tendencies. The student is able to orientate himself/herself in the fundamental developmental stages of European and Czech puppet theatre, is able to characterise the historical functions of puppet theatre, assess the transformation of puppet theatre in the contemporary stage and is able to analyse with the application of the acquired terminology. The student is able to assess contemporary puppet theatre production, and is able to produce a structured text analysing contemporary production taking into account continuity of development and historical context.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the basic concepts of theatre theory and the historical development of theatre.

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam

10 titles of scholarly literature and theatre productions for analysis. Colloquium: knowledge of the taught material and basic literature. The exam includes analysis of the viewed footage from the recommended titles, discussion of a selected text from the required literature, and an oral portion of the exam focused on application of terms and knowledge of factual information.
