Course content
|
1.-3. Definition of art, distinction between aesthetic and artistic value, institutional theory of art 4. Instances of the work of art, work-thing and work-sign, open work 5. The autonomy of art, the specificity of the artistic medium and the negation of the autonomy of art by the avant-gardes 6.-7. The basic concept of the relationship between work and reception, the activity of the perceiver, art as experience 8.-9. Social conditioning of aesthetic preferences and judgements 10.-11. Basic definition of a theatrical work in Czech theatre aesthetics 12. Definition of cultural and theatrical institution, institutional criticism and "institutional avant-garde Required and recommended readings for each topic are listed in the moodle.

Learning outcomes
|
This course presents fundamental and contemporary issues in modern aesthetics and art theory as they relate to theatre. It focuses on the definition of art, the distinction between aesthetic and artistic value, questions of the autonomy of art, and basic concepts of the relationship between work and reception. Attention is also given to the basic concepts of theatrical work, the experience of aesthetic and artistic experience, and current issues in artistic institutions. Topics will be chosen in general terms; the relationship to theatre will be developed, explored and discovered in individual classes. Students will develop an understanding of the basic themes of art theory in relation to theatre and will practise presentation skills, group work and understanding of professional texts.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam
The course will be taught in a lecture format, but there will be a number of seminar hours, the main purpose of which is to practise the acquired knowledge; these days will be specified in moodle. You are allowed to miss two classes, for whatever reason. The course will end with an oral exam, which aims at 1. a good knowledge of the required literature, 2. the ability to connect arguments with one's own examples, and 3. a basic orientation in the recommended literature.
