Learning outcomes
This course aims to explore the relationship between theatre organisations and the climate crisis, and to promote understanding of it. Like other parts of society, cultural organisations are developing strategies to adapt to climate change and mitigate environmental impacts. Permanent public theatres, in particular, are currently facing the challenge of adapting their operations without losing audience interest or aesthetic quality, given their demanding production and staging of performances, permanent ensembles, lighting, and buildings of varying ages. This course introduces students to the issues involved in the green transformation of culture, presenting its possibilities and pitfalls while detailing adaptive measures in theatre operations, building management and theatre production.
Learners will gain a basic understanding of the climate crisis, its social and environmental aspects, and how theatre institutions can adapt their operations and management in response to climate change. They will also practise group work, public speaking, and critical and creative thinking. As the course is taught in seminar format, emphasis is placed on interactive and dialogic modes of learning, supplemented by lectures. Self-study and discussion of regularly assigned professional and artistic texts in English and Czech are also integral to the course, as is the analysis of audiovisual examples.

The course has a combined ending. Learners receive credit for a 15-minute presentation of a selected case study and are evaluated on the basis of their speech. They are then assessed with a grade for a written report of research findings of 5 standard pages (9,000 characters including spaces, while maintaining professional standards). If there is any confusion about the material covered, I recommend contacting the instructor (martin.bernatek@upol.cz) in a timely manner and taking advantage of office hours. Calculation of the credit value of the course: Contact teaching 25h = 1kr Excursion 0,5 kr Presentation = 0,5 kr Written work 5 ns = 0,5 kr Reading of a professional text in AJ approx. 150 pages = 1,5 kr Reading of a professional text in ČJ 200 pages = 1 kr
