Course content
The Church in the world of the 19th century: the French Revolution and its impact on the Church, secularization, national movement, liberalism. The First Vatican Council. Modernism and anti-modernism. The end of the Papal State, the Roman Question and its solution by the Lateran Treaty in 1929. The Pontificate of Leo XIII and its impact on the renewal of theology studies, the social teaching of the Church and the development of the studies of the Church history. The status of the Catholic Church in the Habsburg Monarchy. The status of the Church in the interwar period, its attitudes towards new political problems (Communism, Nazism). The First World War, the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic and its impact on the development of the Church in our state between the two world wars. The Church in the period of the Second World War and after the war. The Second Vatican Council.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to understand the Church history in the 19th and 20th centuries in various manifestations of its life.
Students will learn to understand the continuity, complexity, and relativity of the historical development of the Church in 19th and 20th centuries and to be able to form their own judgement on the activities in the present.

Oral exam
