|
Humanism and the Renaissance. Two Reforms, their parallels and conflicts: protest and continuity. The Council of Trent and its impact. The era of Confessionalisation and the confrontation between the Protestant and Catholic worlds. The situation of the Czech Church within the Habsburg Monarchy (16th-18th centuries). The issue of Turkish expansion and its consequences. The Thirty Years' War. The position of the Church after the Thirty Years' War. The Baroque Culture and Baroque Piety. Jansenism and Gallicanism as prime examples of this development. The Counter-Reformation and Catholic reform in the Czech lands. Pietas Austriaca. The issue of 'secret non-Catholics' and the move towards the Patent of Toleration. The Inquisition; the trials of G. Bruno and G. Galileo. Witch trials in Europe and in the Czech lands. The Church's missionary activity in the early modern period. The Enlightenment and its manifestations in Europe and within the Church. Josephinism. The suppression of the Jesuit Order and the emergence of new religious orders in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is the knowledge of basic characteristics of christian history in the early modern period in various aspects of its life and with the special attention to the specifics of czech history.
To acquire a basic knowledge of church history. The ability to recognise links between individual issues and periods. The ability to place the development of theology within its historical context. The ability to interpret selected types of historical sources.

Prerequisites

A general understanding of historical developments at secondary school level. Completion of this module is conditional upon the successful completion of the module 'Church History in Antiquity and the Middle Ages' (KCD/DTDST)

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance
Students organise their studies on the basis of the study materials and instructions provided in the distance learning support resources; they attend the scheduled webinars and complete the formative assessments (approximately 4). Personal attendance is required for 70 per cent of the webinars; students may view the remaining sessions via a recording. The lecturer will verify, in an appropriate manner, whether the student has studied the material in the recording. An oral examination at the end of the semester will assess whether the student is able to speak knowledgeably and articulately on the topics covered, based on a set of questions provided by the lecturer at the start of the semester. The student's overall assessment also takes into account the marks achieved in the formative assessments on the LMS.
