Course content
|
1. Principles of language development - general and specific development tendencies, their linguistic and extralinguistic stimulation, economy vs. complex information in communication. 2. Development of society and development of lexicon - intelectualisation vs. democratisation, internationalisation vs. purism, (de)terminologisation. 3. Word formation - derivation vs. composition vs. semantic formation, productivity of suffixes, univerbisation, adjective and adverbial comparison, prefixation and verbal aspect. 4. Word order - non-congruent attributes, English (West European) influence on Czech word order, conjunctions, parataxis vs. hypotaxis. 5. Changes in valency of predicate, decline of -n/-t-form of the verb and past conditional in Czech language, periphrastic vs. reflexive form of passive voice. 6. Decline of category of gender, especially in plural, changes in expressing the possesivity, short vs. long adjectives in the sentence. 7. Dynamics of verbal types "maže", "dělá", "kupuje" and of infinitive forms ending with -i. 8. Dynamics of verbal types "tiskne", "mine", "začne" (especially in the preterite form) and ?prosí?, ?trpí? a ?sází? (in present tense). 9. Expansion of noun endings of instr. pl. -ama, -ma, inflection of nouns with root final -k-, -g-, -ch- (loc. pl.), endings -i, -é, -ové in nom. pl. of masculines. 10. Inflection of nouns with root final -l-, inflectional types "hrad" vs. "les". 11. Alternations of quantity of vowels in word root, inflectional types "kost" vs. "píseň", inflection of loan propria. 12. Inflection of pronouns, "short" vs. "long" forms, inflection of numerals.

Learning outcomes
|
The course deals with changes in contemporary Czech lexicon and grammar (especially in Czech inflection), both in the frame of current development of Czech nation and its culture. Main theoretical goals of the course are principles of language change and relationship between spoken and written language.
Student acquires detailed knowledge in changes inside the language system, and thus he will be able to consider the usage of certain language means in texts better and in more differentiated way. Student´s own communicative competence will be improved (the student will better know e.g. communicative value of certain dublets). Beneficial effect of the course consists in giving the complex information about the language as living, oscillating and flexible instrument for communication and building of interpresonal relations. Thus the course makes a contribution to broaden student´s competence in social sciences.

Prerequisites
|
Knowledge in linguistic terminology. General knowledge in Czech history and culture of 20th and 21st century.

Student performance, Systematic Observation of Student, Seminar Work
Activity in class, presentation of certain development tendency in Czech language, using the Czech National Corpus.
