Course content
The aim of this seminar is a presentation of selected topics of language development from the perspective of different research approaches. Attention will be focused both on the general patterns of language development, as well as on the specific language material mainly Slavic and Indo-European, and also the "diachrony of the method" in the development of linguistics. In seminars, the knowledge of selected publications will be required; each topic will have its own "moderator". Topics: 1. Theories of the origin of language 2. Diachrony in synchrony and synchrony in diachrony 3. Causes of language changes in each language plain 4. Regularity - the irregularity, divergence - convergence in language development 5. External influences on language development (changes in psychological nature, the development of spiritual and material culture, sociological, geographical, ethnographical and other aspects) 6. Structural view on language development 7. Options of chronology of sound changes 8. Changes caused by language contacts 9. Linguistic history vs. early history 10. Relationship between diachronic linguistics and other scientific disciplines

Learning outcomes
The discipline is focused on different linguistics approaches to a language development. Various linguistics schools are presented the historical-comparative linguistics from the 19th century, structuralism, theory of grammaticalization and others. The work in the seminaries will be based on commented reading of articles and interpretations of selected language features (especially from Slavic and Indo-European).
Students orientate in diachronic linguistics, they are able to classify phenomena of languages' development either in a general level, or in a material of languages (especially Indo-European).

completed or parallel study of the discipline "Úvod do diachronní slavistiky"
