Learning outcomes

The seminars will focus on presenting the students with selected Biblical texts, which will be selected mainly to represent an array of literary genres, contained in the Bible. The students will be introduced to historical and cultural contexts in which the texts were written and will be made acquainted with their basic interpretation by means of the texts' explanation (exegesis). Another aim of the course will be to follow the reflection of the Biblical stories in question, their characters and models, in Czech literature. The issue of apocryphal writings will also be discussed and the students will be introduced to pertinent (particularly neotestamental) apocrypha, since their stories are in many cases of an equal importance for the literary tradition as canonical texts.
Students will get basic knowledge of selected Biblical texts and will get acquainted with the possibilities of its interpretation. This will raise their competency of the analysis of old literature and will also broaden their cultural horizons.
