Course content
1) Critical disputes of national revival. 2) Jan Neruda: U nás 3) The polemics of the literary generation of Lumír magazine. 4) So-called "manuscripts disputes". 5) Svatopluk Čech (Nevěřme nikomu), J. V. Sládek (Dosti nás) 6) J. S. Machar: Sloky polemické 7) Polemics about the work of Vítězslav Hálek. 8) Polemics of the 90th in connection with incoming modernism. 9) Analýza and Syntetism v novém umění by F. X. Šalda 10) Manifest české moderny - interpretation. 11) Polemics about the nature of decadence movement. 12) The importance of the literature in societal context (Čas, Naše doba, Rozhledy)

Learning outcomes
The seminar focuses on the appearance and character of poetic polemics in the Czech literature of the 19th and early 20th century. Attention will be paid to the phenomenon of controversy in the literature (definition of genre, type of controversy, their place in the contemporary context, key issues). Working in the workshop will be based mainly on excerptions contemporary literary texts and periodicals.
Students will focus on literary polemics and discussions of the end of the 19th and early 20th century, will be able to characterize and specify their importance in literary-historical context of Czech literature.
