Course content
1) Introduction 2) Lecture about typology of Czech pop music in 1960s 3) The first Czech rock lyrics (Jiří Suchý, Eduard Krečmar) 4) Pop music close to the poetry (chansons by Hana Hegerová and other, lyrics by Pavel Kopta and Jan Schneider) 5) Development of lyrics by the group Olympic from 1960s to the beginning of 1970s (LPs Želva, Pták Rosomák, Jedeme, jedeme) 6) Analysis of the first Czech conceptual records (Rebels: Šípková Růženka, Atlantis: Odyssea, Framus Five: Město ER, Flamengo: Kuře v hodinkách) 7) Czech artrock (Progres 2, Olympic) 8) Changes of hardrock (Jiří Schelinger, Katapult) 9) Lyrics by Zdeněk Rytíř (LP Marta Kubišová: Songy a balady, Golden Kids: Micro Magic Circus etc.) 10) Beginnings of the Slovak rock text (Prúdy: Zvoňte zvonky, Pavol Hammel et al.: Zelená pošta, Na II. programe sna) 11) Slovak pop and rock music in the 1980s (Elán, Miroslav Žbirka) 12) Before and after the Velvet Revolution (Nerez: Masopust, Na vařený nudli; Mňága a Žďorp: Made in Valmez) 13) Evaluation of the work in seminar

Learning outcomes
The aim of the seminar is present the lyrics of popular songs as a specific communation code, which may be ethically and esthetically equal to poetry or prose and fill the same function as the literary text. The work in the seminar is based on listening to songs, analysis and interpretation of concrete lyrics especially originated in the 1960s.
Orientation in Czechoslovak pop music from 1960s to 1980s, especially in its lyrics.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

1) active participation, no more than 3 absences 2) paper - analyse of lyrics of 3-5 songs, transcription of these lyrics, preparation of records, length 30 minutes 3) short analyse of selected song recorded after 2000
