Course content
1. Literary criticism, literary history, literary theory 2. Methods of literary criticism 3. Genres of literary criticism 4. The beginnings of Czech literary criticism 5. From a national program to search for artistic values 6. "Scientific" criticism and aesthetics in the 19th century 7. F. X. Šalda in context of modernism 8. Aesthetic and ideological criticism between the two World Wars 9. Václav Černý and artistic freedom 10. Literary criticism in the fifties and sixties of the 20th century: from Štoll to Lopatka 11. Literature and politics in oficial journals, in "samizdat" and exil 12. Literary criticism after 1989: search or resignation?

Learning outcomes
The goal of the course will be to gain knowledge of czech literary criticism in the 19th and 20th century. Lessons are focused on the most important events and periods in the history of the czech literary criticism from the begining of the 19th century to this date. A special attention is given to the literary polemics and controversions and to the problems of aesthetics in relation to the ideology and politics in critical discourse.
