Course content
Main topics: Témata: 1. Pre-scientific linguistics. 2. First period of linguistics as a science in 18th and 19th century. 3. Precursors of linguistic structuralism. 4. Ferdinand de Saussure and Genevian structuralism. 5. Prague structuralism before 1945. 6. Prague structuralism after 1945. 7. Copenhagen structuralism and American structuralism. 8. Development of generative-transformational linguistics. 9. Petr Sgall and functional-generative linguistics. 10. Semantics, pragmatics and text linguistics. 11. Corpus linguistics. 12. Cognitive linguistics.

Learning outcomes
The lecture focuses on development of world´s linguistics from ancient India and Rome to contemporary European and American trends in the analysis of language. The lecture systematically deals with development of Czech linguistics too. The main goal here is the Prague Linguistic Circle and its tradition up to now.
The main goal of the course is to broaden student's horizons, regarding the object of linguistic studies, i.e. language and its structure, and of course the methods of linguistics. Then the student will be able to solve concrete theoretical problems when he prepares his qualification work. Moreover the student will gain wider knowledge in linguistic bibliography.
Prerequisites
Elementary orientation in the terminology of linguistics and in main goals of linguistic research.

Written exam, Student performance

Presence and participation in class, reading of recommended texts, completion of final test (70% success rate needed).
