Course content
1) The development of writing - the influence of old scripts on calligraphy; the present problems concerning the script; the codices up to the invention of letterpress printing + the manuscripts of the late 15th century: the development of the book shape, binding, and its parts; the development of initials and illuminations in the manuscripts of the late 15th century 2) The Renaissance printed book - its features; the first printing and publishing schools and the figures influencing the book form from the end of the 15th century to the end of the 16th century 3) The Baroque book, the Rococo book, the classicist book - their features; the printing and publishing schools and the figures influencing the book form from the 17th century to the 19th century 4) Excursion to the Research Library in Olomouc - the old and rare manuscripts and prints 5) The institution of the book market from the 16th century do the beginning of the 20th century - the publishers, booksellers, libraries, distribution 6) The development of the book illustration, the development of ex libris, the changes in the book graphics and design, the bibliophiles' editions, the artists' books 7) The readers' culture - the readers' fellowships, the literary cafés, the modes of reading, the research and regulation of readers in the 20th century 8) The censorship as an interference in the literary communication - the communication models of the censorship (the censorship in the past, esp. the religious one, the censorship concerning the pulp fiction, the censorship system in the totalitarian Czechoslovakia) 9) The electronic media substituting the book, the e-book, the problems of the text digitalizing

Learning outcomes

The students will gain knowledge of the history of book production, the development of book design (and its relation to the text), and the changes in the two ways of understanding the book: as a means of communication and as an artifact. They will also learn the basic ideas from various fields concerning books: the cultural studies, the book studies, the sociology of literature, the book reception, the book market, the book culture etc.
