Course content
The course focuses on chosen problems of the Czech fiction in the interwar period, its centre subject being the literary works written by the authors associated with the Lidové noviny editorial staff. We analyse and compare various representations of the same theme and different forms of the same genre. For example, we will analyze the horrors of WWI as depicted in the following texts - Jaroslav Hašek: Osudy dobrého vojáka Švejka za světové války (1921-1923), Vladislav Vančura: Pole orná a válečná (1925), Jaromír John: Večery na slamníku (1920; 1930), Karel Poláček: Podzemní město (1937). Or we compare the differences between the following psychological novels - Egon Hostovský: Žhář (1935), Jaroslav Havlíček: Petrolejové lampy (1944), Jarmila Glazarová: Vlčí jáma (1938), Václav Řezáč: Černé světlo (1940).
