Course content
1. Historical and cultural context of the Czech National Revival movement 2. Development of modern Czech literary language 3. Early romanticism in Czech literature 4. Mácha and Erben as the "founding fathers" of Czech poetry 5. Czech poetry of the National Revival period (beyond Mácha and Erben) 6. Emergence of Czech prose in the 19th Century (Sabina, Němcová) 7. Historical and patriotic themes in literature 8. Realism and its development in Czech literature 9. Rural prose and depiction of Czech countryside 10. Development of Czech drama in the 19th century 11. Major authors of the second hald of the 19th century 12. Transition from National Revival to modern literary movements (Manifest české moderny etc.)

Learning outcomes
The seminar focuses on the history of Czech literature of the long 19th century. It will cover selected authors and their works published during this period. Emphasis will be placed not only on acquiring basic knowledge about the nature of literary production in the period under review, but also on its broader historical context. In addition to the core lectures, attention will be paid to reading shorter excerpts from the discussed works.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - interpret the relationship between literature, national identity and cultural revival - identify major authors, works and literary movements of the period - describe the historical and cultural context of Czech literature in the 19th century - explain the development of Czech literary genres/movements during the 19th century
