Course content
1. Historical and cultural background of Czech literature between 1918-1989 2. Czech literature of the First Czechoslovak Republic - classification 3. Literary avant-garde movements (poetism, surrealism) 4. Interwar prose and drama (J. Hašek, K. Čapek, F. Kafka) 5. Czech poetry in the interwar period 6. Literature during the WW2 and the Nazi occupation 7. Post-war literary (and political) developments 8. Socialost Realism and the literature of the 1950s 9. Czech literature during the 1960s cultural liberalization 10. Literature of the Prague Spring and its aftermath 11. Official, samizdat and exile literature during the so called "normalization" 12. Major authoes, works and trends of 1970s and 1980s

Learning outcomes
The seminar focuses on the history of Czech literature after between 1918-1989. It will cover selected authors and their works published in this period. Emphasis will be placed not only on acquiring basic knowledge about the nature of literary production in the period under review, but also on its broader historical context. In addition to the core lectures, attention will be paid to reading shorter excerpts from the discussed works.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - describe the main stages in the development of Czech literature between 1918 and 1989 - identify major literary movements, genres, authors and works of the period - explain the relationship between literary production and historical political and cultural events in 20th century Czechoslovakia - discuss Czech literature within its broader European cultural context
