Course content
1.Historical, cultural and political context of Czech literature after the Velvet Revolution 2. Transformations of the literary field after 1989 3. Major trends and movements in contemporary Czech literature 4. Postmodernism and experimental writing in Czech literature 5. Contemporary Czech prose: themes and genres 6. Contemporary Czech poetry 7. Memory, history and identity in contemporary literature (problem of so called "autenticitní literatura") 8. Literature reflecting social and political change 9. Czech literature in the context of global trends (post-colonialism, critical theory etc.) 10. Literature by young/emerging authors 11. Czech literature in translation / translation in Czech literature 12. Current trends in the third decade of the 21st century Czech literature

Learning outcomes
The seminar focuses on the history of Czech literature after 1989. It will cover selected authors and their works published after this year. Emphasis will be placed not only on acquiring basic knowledge about the nature of literary production in the period under review, but also on its broader historical context. In addition to the core lectures, attention will be paid to reading shorter excerpts from the discussed works.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - describe the histrocial and cultural context of Czech literature after 1989 - identify major authors, works and literary trends of the given period - explain the relationship between literature and social, political and cultural transformations in contemporary Czech society - compare different genres and thematic approaches in contemporary Czech literature
