Course content
1. Introduction to film-literature relations and principles of adaptation theory; 2. Literary source texts and their transformation into film narrative; 3. Kytice (Erben) - literary analysis and film adaptation; 4. Babička (B. Němcová) - literary context and film interpretation; 5. Comparative discussion: adaptation strategies in Kytice and Babička; 6. Rozmarné léto (Vančura) - style, narration and cinematic adaptation; 7. Valerie a týden divů (Nezval) - surrealism and visual style; 8. Comparative discussion: poetic and avant-garde adaptations in Czech New Wave cinema; 9. Modlitba pro Kateřinu Horovitzovou (Lustig) - narrative and historical interpretation; 10. Spalovač mrtvol (Fuks) - literary horror and film aesthetics; 11. Ostře sledované vlaky and Obsluhoval jsem anglického krále (Hrabal) - humor, irony and adaptation; 12. Final comparative discussion: Czech literary canon in film adaptation.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - explain basic theoretical concepts of film adaptation and intermediality; - describe key principles of transforming literary texts into film form; - analyze selected Czech literary works and their film adaptations; - compare narative strategies in literature and film.
