1) Utterance theory, predication, reference, quantification, sentence, utterance 2) Textual coherence and cohesion, means of deixis 3) Modality, types of modal meanings, means to express modality, modality vs. communicative functions of an utterance. Communicative functions in the Czech linguistic tradition 4) Functional sentence perspective as a means of cohesion. Thematic progressions in authentic texts

Learning outcomes |
During the whole course the students will be encouraged to apply practical analysis on authentic texts. The analyses will aim to discover and describe rules of syntactic composition of the texts. Due attention will be paid to syntactic phenomena that scope over more than one utterance. The main focus of the course will be on means of text construction, text cohesion and the phenomena connected with expressing attitudes, modality and communicative functions.
