Course content
1. Amino acids, peptides and proteins - structure, classification, biosynthesis and degradation, function in a living organism. 2. Enzymes and regulation of metabolic reactions - structure of enzymes (cofactors, vitamins as precursors of cofactors), enzyme nomenclature and classification, regulation of enzyme activity (activation, inhibition) 3. Carbohydrates - characteristics of the most important monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides in the metabolism of animals and plants, classification according to structure and function. 4. Lipids - characteristics of the basic types of lipids in the metabolism of animals and plants, their properties and functions in living organisms. Biosynthesis and degradation of lipids and their regulation, transport and storage. 5. Main metabolic pathways of carbohydrates with an emphasis on their regulation - biosynthesis and degradation of glucose, fructose, sucrose, glycogen and starch 6. Photosynthesis - primary (light) and secondary (dark) phases of photosynthesis, their regulation and significance. 7. Central pathways of aerobic metabolism - citrate cycle, fatty acid oxidation and respiratory chain. Selected pathways of anaerobic metabolism - formation and breakdown of lactate. 8. Transport mechanisms in a living organism. Structure and biological membranes and their functions, membrane transport. 9. Nucleic acids - basic characteristics, structure, classification. Processes of replication, transcription, translation and their regulation. 10. Signal pathways - intercellular and intracellular signaling, hormones, receptors, second messengers, enzyme cascades. 11. The interconnectedness of metabolic reactions and their regulation - responses to the state of starvation and high food supply. ?
