Course content
Basic skills in biochemistry laboratory: weights, pipetting technique, dilution series, preparation of buffers. Basic methods in biochemistry laboratory: homogenization of biological material, extraction and precipitation, filtration and centrifugation, membrane separation, spectrophotometry (calibration curve, concentration measurements), chromatography (gel permeation chromatography, TLC), electromigration methods (agarose electrophoresis), distillations, titration, conductometry, microscopic methods and analyses.

1. Attendance 100% attendance in all practical sessions is required. In case of illness or other serious reasons, one practical session may be made up in another group, but this is permitted no more than once per semester. Any absence must always be excused in writing (by e-mail) in advance, before the start of the practical session. Exceptional circumstances (e.g. hospitalization) will be dealt with on an individual basis. 2. Laboratory Reports Preparation and submission of reports A pair of students working on a given task submits one joint report in electronic format (.docx). If one of the students fails to fulfil their responsibilities during the practical session, the instructor (or the student themselves) may decide that each student will submit their own report separately. Submission deadlines The report must be submitted no later than the beginning of the following practical session. The report from the final practical session must also be submitted within 7 days of completing the task at the latest. All reports must be approved no later than 4 weeks after the date of the final practical session. Report assessment The maximum score for one report is 10 points. If a student fails to submit a report by the regular deadline, 5 points will be deducted. Corrections to reports If a report needs to be corrected, each revised version must be submitted within one week of receiving the report back. If the corrected version is not submitted within 7 days of the report being returned by the instructor, 5 points will be deducted. If not all errors or deficiencies have been corrected in the revised report, 2 points will be deducted. The report must always be approved by the practical session supervisor. The exception is the report from the final completed practical session. This report will not be returned for correction; points will simply be deducted appropriately for errors and deficiencies. Plagiarism If a report is found to have been copied (e.g. the reported results do not correspond to the data recorded in the laboratory notebook), the practical session will be considered invalid and the student will not be awarded course credit. 3. Assessment of Preparation for the Practical Session During the practical session, the student's level of preparation will be assessed by means of a test consisting of 5 questions covering both the theoretical and practical aspects of the assigned task. One of the questions will involve a calculation. The maximum score for the test is 6 points. 2-3 points on the test: The student will be orally examined by the practical session supervisor. If the student fails to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the topic, they will be asked to leave the practical session. If the student demonstrates adequate understanding of the topic and the issue was only the type or format of the questions in the test, they may continue with the practical session, and the points awarded in the test will remain unchanged. Less than 2 points on the test: The student may not continue with the practical session and must complete it as a make-up session. Due to insufficient preparation, a practical session may be made up only once per semester. AWARDING OF COURSE CREDIT To be awarded course credit, the student must fulfil all of the requirements stated above, and obtain a sufficient number of points for preparation and submitted laboratory reports. Assessment 75-100% of the total points - Course credit is awarded (1st regular attempt). 50-74% of the total points - The student must take a course-credit test (2nd regular attempt). Less than 50% of the total points - Course credit will not be awarded, and the student must enrol in the course again in the following academic year. Course-credit test The course-credit test must be completed with a score of more than 70%. The course-credit test may be retaken only once (3rd regular attempt).
