Course content
1. Introduction to fermentation technology, bioreactors, nutrient media, cultivation conditions. 2. Overview of microorganisms with industrial use. 3. Microorganisms in food industry (production of alcohols, dairy products, etc.). 4. Production of antibiotics, vitamins and pharmaceutics. 5. Cosmetics and traditional biotechnology. 6. Application of microorganisms in wood processing industry. 7. Impact of microorganisms in agriculture. 8. Biodegradation: how microorganisms help to protect environment.

Learning outcomes
To introduce the use of microorganisms in traditional biotechnologies, to draw attention to ubiquitous occurence of microorganisms as a result of their application in various industrial processes and to understand their importance in waste treatment.
Students will aquire broad fundamental knowledge about the use of microorganisms in industrial processes and in protecting the environment.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of microbiology and molecular biology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam

Written examination, minimum 50 % points to pass.
