Course content
History of microscopy, optical principles of light microscopy, image construction by a compound microscope. Basic components of a light microscope - objectives, eyepieces, illumination, numerical aperture, and magnification. Special microscopy techniques - darkfield, phase contrast, polarization, interference, Nomarski differential interference contrast (DIC). Fluorescence microscopy - principle of fluorescence, components of a fluorescence microscope, fluorochromes, basic fluorescence techniques. Confocal and super-resolution microscopy - operating principle of a confocal microscope, confocal microscopy techniques, systems for microscopic image enhancement, super-resolution microscopy techniques. Electron microscopy - principles of TEM and SEM, specimen preparation.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Lecture, Monologic Lecture(Interpretation, Training), Dialogic Lecture (Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
Gaining an overview of light, confocal, and electron microscopy, as well as conventional and advanced microscopy techniques and their practical applications.
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: - describe the principles of image construction in light and electron microscopes - describe in detail the construction and components of simple and advanced light microscopes - explain the principles of contrast-enhancing microscopy techniques - describe the construction of a fluorescence microscope, the principle of fluorescence, and basic fluorochromes - explain the operating principle of a confocal microscope and the basic techniques of confocal and super-resolution microscopy - describe the basic types of electron microscopes (TEM and SEM) and the methods of specimen preparation for electron microscopy
