|
Birth rate and mortality rate: The basic demographic parameters. Population development in the world, in Europe, in CR. Birth rate indicators. Mortality rate indicators. Child mortality rate. Variables influencing actual birth and mortality rate; Marriage, family, and family life: Family as a group of persons united by blood or marriage. Marriage as a socially accepted and sanctified sexual bond between two adults. Cohabitation and civil union as marriage alternatives. Divorce rate and cohabitation; Ontogenesis as a viewpoint of the disciplines of social studies: Conformity and deviation: Conform and nonconforming behavior; Social interactions in everyday life: Action(s), identity and understanding in everyday life. Interactions in time and space. Role and preparation for the role (stage and backstage). Identity problems, Identity crisis; Lifestyle: Way of life and lifestyle. Alternative lifestyles. Leisure time and its reasonable spending in today's society; Multiculturalism: Migration and immigration. Problems of people's coexistence in a multicultural society; Gender differences and stereotypes: Historical development and actual change of social roles concerning gender; Work and economy life: Changes of the labor market. Unemployment as a social problem. Equal opportunities for women and men on the labor market. Work and family life; Social differences in society: Absolute and relative poverty. Poverty measurement. Learning outcomes
|
This course aims to introduce students to the particular areas of social life, studied by diverse applied disciplines of social studies and which are usable in the work of a teacher of social studies (all based on the sociological and anthropological disciplines of bachelor studies). After passing this course, a student can explain the basic social terminology, describe fundamental problems of today's society, analyze the actual or past social changes concerning the actual course of events in the Czech Republic and in the world for which blending of cultures is characteristic. Student masters critical thinking and reflection during the debates on topics of the actual social problems.
After passing the course, students should: - understand the key contexts of birth and mortality rate; - understand the principles of ontogenesis from the viewpoint of disciplines of social studies; - deliberate about social interactions in everyday life; - describe and explain conformity and nonconforming behavior; - understand the problematics of marriage, family, and family life and interpret them from the sociological and anthropological viewpoint; - be well informed about the problematics of multiculturalism, migration, and immigration and refuse stereotypes and prejudices; - be well informed about the principle of gender differences, stereotypes, and prejudices - know how to promote men/woman equality and equality of opportunities; - analyze unemployment from the sociological point of view and suggest suitable precautions in the fight against unemployment; - understand the problematics of social differences in society, especially problematics of poverty and its elimination; - understand and accept (within legislative boundaries) alternative lifestyle; - understand problematics of social deviation and pathology, including problematics of extremism, substance addiction, and criminality; - describe the influence of mass media, including the internet, on everyday life; - Understand the problematics of global changes and ecology crisis and be able to express their opinion.

Assessment methods and criteria

The presence in the lectures is recommended, minimum of 80% of attendance in seminars. Requirements for credit: choice of 1.) a suitable book concerning the particular sociological topic - with student's analysis; 2) a suitable video concerning the particular sociological topic - with student's analysis (precisely made bibliographic references; minimum of 1 standard page A4). Presentation of the fulfilled task in seminars. Requirements for an exam: a final paper on the topic of "Selected social problems of today." The final paper must include a minimum of 3 relevant domestic sources and three relevant foreign sources - in original (precisely made bibliographic references; minimum of 5-8 standard pages A4); its defence and classification.
