Course content
Presentation of basic philosophical terms, an overview of philosophy and historical development of ethical schools. Analysis of the ethical problems of medical and nursing practice. The importance of communication with the client, and emphasis on creating an ethical relationship in the helping professions. Protection of life in nursing. Deontological codes of health and the rights of individual groups of patients, ethical issues of euthanasia, dying, abortions, contraception, transplantation, alternative medicine. Selected case studies and model situations solving specific ethical problems.

Learning outcomes
Orientation in philosophy/ethics and its terminology, presentation of the foundations of philosophical ethics with a focus on healthcare and social work. To illustrate the relationship between philosophy and medicine, philosophy and ethics, to discuss the issue of human freedom and professional responsibility. The roots of European ethical thinking. Worldwiev, paradigm and its influence on a health worker. Basic principles and requirements of moral conduct, conscience as an essential component of morality. Approaches to life, death, health and disease, the hierarchy of values. Care of dying and survivors in the world and in our country. Death and dying ethically. Ethical aspects of genetics. Ethics in helping professions / Ethics in nursing.
Student will be able to apply the following topics in the educational process: - What is the meaning of responsibility? - Service as an expression of practical philosophy. - Moral behavior and conscience in the history of ethics. - Dignity of human life from an ethical point of view. - Ethical conception of man and the quality of life. - Interpretation of the Declaration of Human Rights - normative ethics in the practice of ethical codes. - Suffering and pain of man and the contribution of ethics to its mitigation. - Old age and death as an ethical problem. - Analysis of patientes' rights and their justification. - Pluralism of opinion on life and the wolrd and its borders. - Philosophical concept of goog and evil in the health and social issues.
