Learning outcomes
Following completion, the student should be able to: identify the type of complex sentence (coordinate or subordinate), analyse complex sentences and determine the type and structure of subordinate clauses, recognise sentence condensation and propose an appropriate Czech equivalent, understand the information structure of the sentence and the distribution of communicative dynamism, explain the structure of sentences with emphatic word order, use English punctuation correctly.
The course Syntax (Part 2) develops students' deeper understanding of key syntactic structures of English, thereby strengthening their disciplinary knowledge in linguistics (1.1). Through topics such as morphological typology, periphrasis and auxiliary verbs, polar and detailed questions, negation, special subjects, complex condensation, and subordinate clauses, students acquire a systematic understanding of the grammatical mechanisms underlying English sentence structure. This theoretical knowledge also provides a foundation for the future pedagogical mediation of grammatical phenomena in language teaching (1.2). By analysing authentic grammatical patterns and typical learner difficulties, the course indirectly supports the ability to explain grammatical structures clearly and respond to learners' questions and misunderstandings (2.4). At the same time, engagement with linguistic analysis and academic sources develops students' analytical skills and responsible work with linguistic information, contributing to their ongoing professional development (6.1, 6.2).
