The English Grammar 1 course introduces morphology into the system of language description, defines central concepts and their relevance to the teaching of a typologically distinct language, and illustrates them with the grammatical categories of individual parts of speech. It systematically highlights differences from the mother tongue. In seminars, students apply theoretical knowledge from lectures and their own study of required readings to selected texts from contemporary English literature. Objectives: Objectives: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: - work with the basic terminology of English morphology, - define the parts of speech and their grammatical categories, - compare these grammatical categories with those of their native language, - analyse grammatical categories in English texts. Topics: Basic terminology (morpheme, morph, allomorph, word, parts of speech, etc.). Nouns (meaning and syntactic functions of nouns in English and Czech). Grammatical categories of nouns. Pronouns (classification of pronouns, functions in English and Czech). Adjectives (classification of adjectives, gradation). Adverbs. Numerals. Prepositions. Connectors and interjections. Verbs (syntactic and semantic characteristics). Grammatical categories of verbs.
