The course introduces lexicology into the system of language description and identifies the central concepts of English word formation, lexical semantics, relations between lexical units and the development of English vocabulary. It systematically draws attention to differences and similarities with the mother tongue and illustrates these with examples from contemporary language. It clarifies the importance of lexicology for teaching English. In seminars, students apply theoretical knowledge from lectures and their own study of compulsory literature in selected English literary texts or their translations. Aims: After completing the course students will be able to: - define and correctly use the basic terms in the lexicology field; - correctly identify and actively apply word-forming processes, - explain relations between lexical units, - explain the development of English vocabulary, - independently work with different types of corpora and dictionaries. Topics: Lexicology, language and reality. Word and lexeme, language sign. Lexical semantics, meaning of words (denotation, connotation). Structure of lexicon (paradigmatic relations). Word-formation (derivation, composition, abbreviation, neologisms, borrowings, etc.). Brief overview of English vocabulary development, lexicalization. Lexicology and translation (Google Translate, etc.). Corpora, BNC, printed and electronic dictionaries, OED online.
