The instruction covers the following topics: Linguistics and its scope Language as a means of human communication Language as a system Morphology Syntax Lexicology and semantics Classification of languages Comparing English and Czech

Learning outcomes
The aim of this introductory course is to prepare students for further theoretical study of language. It provides an overview of various branches of linguistics (applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics etc.) and essential linguistic disciplines (phonetics, phonology, morphology, lexicology, syntax, semantics, etc.) and introduces terminology associated with categorising and analysing different aspects of language. Theoretical issues are discussed with reference to both English and Czech, which helps students to understand the essential typological differences between the two languages. Students are responsible for doing reading assignments. The seminars are devoted to discussions over problematic topics and terminology.
