Course content
|
Language and society. Language varieties - the concept of standard English, the social role of RP. Regional dialects. Attitudes to dialects on part of different social classes. Language and ethnic identity. The structure of conversation - social conventions in different countries. Gender differences in language use. The language situation in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. British and American English. World Englishes. English as a Lingua Franca. Bilingualism and multilingualism. Language policy - national and official languages, minority languages, language rights in different countries. The language policy of the European Union.

Learning outcomes
|
This introduction to sociolinguistics is focused on topics that teachers of English should be aware of, esp. social and regional varieties of English, language and ethnic minorities, gender differences, social interaction patterns, politeness, language policy. Additionally, the issues of English as a global language and the concept of "World Englishes" are discussed.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance, Didactic Test, Systematic Observation of Student, Seminar Work
80% attendance (70% students with individual study plan). Active participation in all lessons. Timely completion of all homework tasks set. Satisfactory completion of the end-of-term test - over 70%.
