Learning outcomes
As courses in Anglophone cultures tend to focus on the UK and the USA exclusively, this compulsory course is designed to provide a survey of other English speaking countries on all continents. Thus, the goal of this class is to familiarize students with basic information about less "visible" Anglophone countries across the globe. The overarching theme of the course is the history and legacy of the British colonial empire. Within this framework, historical personalities, social trends and cultural stereotypes will be critically re-evaluated and confronted with the standard fare curricula of English/Czech secondary education. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: -- characterize individual English-speaking countries from a geographical, social or cultural perspective, -- describe the contributions of the most important figures in the political and cultural life of these countries, -- select a text, video, etc. on the realities of English-speaking countries for use in teaching English in connection with the RVP.
