Course content
Topics: The importance of correct pronunciation. The process of speech. Phonetics and phonology. Transcription. English vowels. English consonants. Speech-spelling correspondence. The syllable. Weak form words. Word stresss, sentence stress, rhythm. Linking, assimilation, elision. Intonation.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: - distinguish and characterize standard British and American English pronunciation, - use the symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to transcribe English words and sentences, and work with pronunciation dictionaries, - describe the articulatory system and explain the function the articulators, - describe the differences between the inventory and articulation of phonemes in English and Czech, - systematically describe the suprasegmental elements of English pronunciation and other pronunciation phenomena manifested in connected speech (word and sentence accent, rhythm, intonation, linking, assimilation, elision), - correctly articulate all English sounds , - demonstrate that they have acquired in practice the typical suprasegmental features of English pronunciation, especially rhythm, intonation and linking.

Prerequisites
Proficiency in English at B2.1 and a successful completion of school leaving exam in Czech.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Didactic Test

At least 80% presence in lessons (70% individual study plan students). Continuous requirements: Two written tests during the term (Test 1 - Segmental pronunciation features, Test 2 -Suprasegmental pronunciation features). If one or both tests are failed, there are two more options to pass a credit test covering all the content of the course. The pass line for each test is 70%. Examination requirements: Mainly practical oral examination will be focused on reading aloud, answering specific pronunciation questions related to the text and transcriptions of several selected words. Students are entitled to two retakes. Requirements for students with ISP: - students must complete all tasks set by the teacher during and at the end of the semester - attendance is not compulsory but the terms of credit test announce during the semester must be observed!
