Course content
|
An overview of the development of American art an architecture, its main schools and tendencies. Teacher's lectures and presentations will be accompanied by visuals. Students will prepare presentations about a work of art or a painter or architect of their own choice. Topics: Native Americans and their art. Colonisers and their architecture. Spanish and English influence. Building a new nation. 18th century. John Trumbull. Big business. 19th century. The Hudson River School. Urban development, skyscrapers, Harlem renaissance. Ashcan School. Tradition versus avant-garde. Bauhaus and its influence on the USA. Abstract expressionism. Plurality of styles. Modern American movements and trends. Other topics depend on students'choice of presentations.

Students will be able to define different stages of American architecture and art in the context of historical and social events, characterise the most important personalities and their work.

Student performance, Analysis of linguistic, Dialog, Seminar Work
Active participation in lessons, completion of all tasks and tests, and a presentation of student's choice.
