Course content
Late Victorian novel. T. Hardy, O. Wilde Drama at the beginning of 20th cent.: O. Wilde, G.B. Shaw, S. O´Casey, J.M. Synge, T. Rattigan, N. Coward. Realistic novel and short storys of the 1st half of 20th cent. Modernism: novel and poetry. Novel after World War II. Postmodernism. J. Barnes, M. Amis, I. McEwan, J. Boyd, K. Ishiguro. Postcolonial literature: V.S. Naipaul, S. Rushdie, A Levi, A. Desai, M. Ali. Contemporary women authors. A. Carter, J. Winterson, A. Brookner. Drama after World War II: J. Osborne, A. Wesker, P. Shaffer, A. Ayckbourn, T. Stoppard.

Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course, students will be able to: - orient themselves in the history of English literature of the 20th and 21st century - name and characterize major authors and their works in historical context - explain the significance of literary works - evaluate the quality of literary texts - interpret texts against their historical background, the authors' lives and contemporary reception.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary)

Students are required: to read on schedule (shorter texts: short stories or poems and also several novels), participate actively in class discussions, read recommended books in English and be prepared to discuss them with the teacher, write an essay or have a presentation.
