Course content
An overview of the development of American art and architecture, the most important schools and movements. Students will prepare a presentation on one painter, architect, or just one major work during the semester and present it in class as scheduled; more information on Moodle. Topics: Native American art. Colonizers and their settlements. Spanish and English influence. Building a New Nation. 18th century. John Trumbull. Business time. 19th century. The Hudson River School. Urbanism and the search for order. Aristocratic country houses versus modest dwellings. The American Southwest in Art. Skyscrapers. Harlem Renaissance. Ashcan School Tradition and Avant-garde. Bauhaus and its influence in the USA. Abstract expressionism. Pluralism of styles. Modern American movements and trends.

Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to: - describe and characterise the cultural-historical background of the development of individual periods and styles of the history of fine art and architecture in the USA, - recognize and classify selected examples of US works of art, including paintings and murals, sculptures, reliefs from various periods, and important buildings, into individual periods and styles, - characterize the work of the most important representatives or movements of fine arts and architecture in the USA and know their most important works.
