Course syllabus: Introduction Disciplines related to SLA The role of the native language: an historical overview Recent perspectives on the role of previously known languages Typological and functional approach to SLA Formal approaches to SLA Looking at interlanguage processing Instructed second language learning Second and foreign language data

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce cognitive and social aspects of the process of second language acquisition (SLA). We will discuss various factors influencing this process, such as age, personality, motivation and others. Theoretical models of SLA and methodology of research are introduced. Students are asked to present their own research proposal in the field of SLA.
The course provides an overview of the study of second langauge acquisition. Students learn about the kinds of research questions asked by SLA researchers and are introduced to methodology of SLA research.
Prerequisites
Prior completion of UJ00 (Introduction to the study of language) is recommended.
