Tentative syllabus: Learning the ropes (using the PCs and software). Articulation of English sounds. Inventory of English phonemes. Phonological rules affecting English consonants. Phonological rules affecting English vowels. Connected speech. Midterm review. Received Pronunciation and General American. London English. Scottish English. Southern Accent. Foreign-accented English.

Learning outcomes

1. Equip students with basic theoretical knowledge that will lead to a better understanding of the regularities of English pronunciation. 2. Develop practical competence of students. Emphasis is placed on improving their comprehension of English running speech. 3. Introduce basic differences between different varieties of English (Received Pronunciation. Estuary English. Cockney. Scottish English. General American. Southern US Accent.)
