Course content
There are two parallel versions of the course: one for students whose topic is literature/culture studies, and one for students whose topic is linguistics/translation/didactics. In the seminar we will deal with (i) a more detailed specification of the chosen topic (ii) methodology of tha data collection and analysis (iii) formatting the work on PC. At the end the student will be able to present a short (but well formated) summary of their future thesis and a list of literature. Further topics include: Formal requirements for BA thesis, sources: databases, relevant libraries, interlibrary loans Academic style Plagarism Chicago Manual of Style, MLA

Learning outcomes
At the beginning students will learn certain general metodological principles applicable to academic papers, format of bibliography, citations etc. They will learn more about working with data and research literature. At the end they will be able to present a short abstract about their future work and its syllabus.
The course is focused on acquiring competence in reading and academic writing.
Prerequisites
The course is intended for undergraduate students of English Philology. They choose it no later than two semesters before their planned research paper defense, i.e., typically in the spring semester of their second year of study or, at the latest, in the autumn semester of their third year (ideally at a time when they already have an assigned topic and a designated supervisor). The course is offered in two parallel versions according to the focus of the research paper: linguistics/translation and literary/cultural. Students choose ONLY ONE of those.
