Course content
1. The Zohar in the history of Jewish literature 2. The Aramaic of the Zohar in the history of Aramaic 3. Structure and process of composition: theories and evidences 4. Hebrew parts of the Zohar 5. Focus passages I: the rose among the thorns (Zohar I, 1a) 6. Focus passages II: Rabbi Hiyya's visit in the heavenly academy (ibid. 4a-b) 7. Focus passages III: The Torah as a girl in love (ibid. II, 99a-b) 8. Focus passages IV: The dark sparkle (ibid. I, 15a) 9. Focus passages V: What is the serpent that flies in the air? (ibid. II, 95a) 10. The Aramaic of the Zohar: morphology 11. The Aramaic of the Zohar: syntax 12. The Aramaic of the Zohar: vocabulary

Learning outcomes
Zohar: Introduction and Text Reading The course introduces the basic text of Kabbalah, its Aramaic grammar and vocabulary.
Ability to read and understand some parts of the Zohar in its original language. Knowledge of the basic textual history and structure of the Zohar.
Prerequisites
min. 2 semester of Hebrew and 1 semester of Aramaic - or readiness to learn the basics of Aramaic quickly and diligently.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Systematic Observation of Student, Seminar Work

Attendance and preparation for classes; short tests, and oral exam at the end of the semester.
