Course content |
1. Hebrew language during the Middle Ages 2. Hebrew scripts during the Middle Ages. The origins of the "Rashi script." 3. Biblical commentaries: extracts from Rashi and Ibn Ezra 4. Historical literature: extracts from Sefer Yosippon 5. Religious literature: extracts from Sefer Hasidim 6. Scientific/philosophical literature: extracts from Gersonides' commentary on Averroes' epitome of the Book of Animals (manuscript-based)

Learning outcomes |
Students will learn the basic differences between Biblical vs. Medieval vs. Modern Hebrew and will gain experiences in reading the most important types of Medieval Hebrew prose literature partly on the basis of manuscripts. Thus the course will introduce the most important concepts of medieval Hebrew paleography too.
