Course content
The philosophical-religious unit of seminars deals with various aspects of Jewish intellectual thinking and religion. In its individual seminars an emphasis will be placed on working with primary period texts and secondary foreign-language literature dealing with these period texts. Students, working independently, will not only be able to acquire an overview of basic facts but also acquire deep knowledge regarding the question of Jewish philosophical-religious thinking in its different forms. The complex discourse of Jewish thinking consists of many components which are dealt with in individual seminars. Specific rabbinic religious thinking (and texts) and religious law with European philosophy are dealt with in detail. Subsequently the work and thinking of Jewish intellectuals who, not only in exile, formed the Jewish existence and culture is discussed. The comparison of Jewish intellectual thinking with the general one and the activity of Jewish intellectuals in the majority society will be an essential part of the seminars. The list of offered seminars is updated at the beginning of every semester. Students will choose any number of seminars from the list which they will pass after acquiring the credits. Their choice should be determined by their own consideration regarding the scheduled knowledge that they have to acquire before the state exams.
