Course content |
Approaches to the field of Geriatrics. A healthy elderly person. Aging changes of particular organ systems. Risk factors for development of diseases in old age. Specifics and special aspects of selected diseases of cardiovascular systém (ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension, fibrillation ventricular, thromboembolic disease). Respiratory system diseases (pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Digestive system diseases (duodenal ulcer disease, large intestine cancer, constipation, diarrhea). Neuropsychiatric diseases (dementia, vascular brain lesions). Locomotor system diseases (osteoarherosis). General geriatrics - prevention of malnurition, urine incontinence, falls, gaint disorders, pain. Principles of rational pharmacotheraphy.

Learning outcomes |
Introduction to the field of Geriatrics and its specific issues: atypical progression of diseases in old age, their diagnostics, treatment and prevention. Functional examinations of the elderly, self-suficiency assessment and cognitive screening. Students will be introduced to the problematics of pharmacotheraphy in old age, to the principles of prevention of polypharmacotheraphy and to the possibilities of monitoring adherence to medication. Introduction to geriatrics syndromes and characteristics of frail elderly.
Students will be prepared for professional work with geriatric patients considering individual and age particularities in nursing care. |
