Topics of seminars and practical lectures: 1. Introduction to medical terminology, etymology, basic English word formation rules. 2. Learning techniques, practical guidelines for comprehension and study. Word formation rules. 3. Prefixes, roots, suffixes (procedures, illnesses, diseases, diagnostic tests, medical specialists, anatomy) 4. Body systems (skeleton, muscles, circulatory, respiratory and nervous system, other selected areas) 5. Medical abbreviations, acronyms, symbols and eponyms.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to medical terminology, language style and the characteristics of the specialized medical language - with an emphasis on the field of physiotherapy. Students will get acquainted with the morphological rules applied in word formation (prefixes, roots, suffixes), semantics, pronunciations and combinations of morphemes. Attention will be paid to the expansion of vocabulary by anatomical areas, the most common disorders, diseases and medical procedures. Emphasis will be placed on understanding of medical text, stylistic peculiarities and their practising and use in spoken and written form. The special chapter represent commonly used English abbreviations. Students will learn practical tips how to study the terminology. The aim of the course is to expand the specific vocabulary, to improve the comprehension of medical texts, to consolidate common grammatical structures typical for medical terminology considering the phonetics and morphological peculiarities and make comprehension and professional communication in English easier.
On completion, students will understand the morphological structure of medical terminology, will be familiar with the word-formation process and will be able to comprehend both common and previously unknown terms. They will know the most frequent terms used for anatomical descriptions, illnesses and diseases, and medical procedures.
