Course content
|
The content of the course consists of seminars, from which students will take away the skill of breaking bad news according to the SPIKES protocol, i.e., sensitively and respecting the patient, they will be able to react to the emotions of patients and their families and manage them. The training will be provided in an interactive form (playing games); students will try delivering a message, but also the role of the patient. Practical bedside sessions will take place at the Department of Hemato-oncology of the University Hospital Olomouc, at the Department of Long-term Acute Care of the Olomouc Military Hospital, at the Hospice na sv.Kopečku, and at the mobile hospice Strom života. The teachers will be doctors, palliative care physicians from hospitals and hospices, a chaplain, and a social worker.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim is to teach students to recognize the palliative needs of oncological and non-oncological patients, to teach them to communicate the transition from curative to palliative treatment, and to acquaint them with the legal and ethical basics of palliative care. Students will learn to alleviate the disease symptoms and patients' fears at the end of life. Students will be introduced to the concept of teamwork, which means the cooperation of the attending physician, palliative care physician, social worker, chaplain, psychologist, and the patient's family. The course will teach students to identify the preferences and wishes of patients. Students will get to know mobile hospice care and its benefits.
Students will be prepared to take care of the terminally ill patient. They will be able to perceive the patient's needs, listen to them, and communicate the prognosis of diseases. Students will prepare for their own responses to challenging situations and will be able and willing to learn from other team members.
