Course content
Downhill skiing focuses on the following elementary programme: - General skiing training (manipulation, walking, turns, climbs, falls, getting up, riding a ski tow). - Specialized skiing training (direct and sideways movement, sideways sliding, stepping, skating). - Turns on a slope (stem and parallel ski positions). - Stem turns (snowplough, starting in snowplough, starting in stem position). - Parallel turns (higher or smaller degree of drift). - Moderate accentuated wave. - Drift turns: basic, medium. - Carve wave. - Carve turns: basic, medium. Cross-country skiing focuses on classic and free technique: - Cross-country training (balancing exercise, basic position, climbs, downhill, stopping: sideways sliding, single and double stem, change of direction: turns, telemarking). - Classic technique (diagonal stride, double poling stride). - Free technique (single sided and double sided skating, V2, V2 alternate). Skiing tourism on cross-country skis or snowshoes, observing all organizational and safety principles for group hikes in a winter terrain. Basics of snowboarding (only for the following courses: Recreation and Leisure Studies, Applied Physical Activity and Coaching and Sport).

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on skiing and stays in winter nature. It covers the technique and methodology of skiing, skiing tourism and movement in free terrain. Throughout the course the students gain basic downhill and cross-country skiing skills. The students learn about safety rules on downhill slopes and cross-country tracks and in free terrain. Information about this course was translated to English within the project Internationalization of the Faculty of Physical Culture, Palacký University, Olomouc, No. CZ.1.07/2.2.00/28.0028, co-funded by the European Social Fund and the Government of the Czech Republic.
Upon completion of the course the student: - Is able to demonstrate basic downhill skiing skills. - Is able to demonstrate classic and free cross-country skiing technique. - Knows and observes basic safety rules of mountain activities. - Is able to describe and apply various methods of waxing cross-country and downhill skis. - Is able to prepare and deliver activities on snow using various aids.
Prerequisites
The course is designed for Bachelor students of the following courses: Physical Education and Sport, Applied Physical Education, Population Protection, PE Teaching (full-time study).
