Course content
The Historical and philosophical aspects of the Nature conservation and its beginning in context of the Human impacts on the nature. Actual position of the Topic of the Nature Conservation in complex of the Environmental conservation and science, Conservation Biology. General questions in Nature Conservation - influences and occasions of deteriorating and loose of biodiversity and habitats. Actual status of Czech nature and key factors influencing natural habitats and species. Development of the methods and conceptions in Nature conservation, theories, hypothesis and research topics in Nature conservation. Principles of design and management of nature reservations. Landscape conservation, theoretical roots and practical steps in Czech Republic. Basic International conventions, agreements and unions and another forms of transboundary cooperation. State police in nature conservation, state organisations and authority, private firms and non government organisations. Prevention of the damages on nature, environmental assessment, PR in nature conservation. Natura 2000 and its transposition and implementation in Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes
The course aims at presenting actual information and procedures from the branch. Major approaches, conceptual and theoretical topics are listed in syllabus.
The student: understands and connects ecological theory with conservation practice; explains the importance of biological diversity for ecosystem functioning and the provision of ecosystem services, and clarifies the fundamental determinants of species diversity distribution on Earth describes and interprets the main causes of biodiversity loss in the Czech Republic and Central Europe; explains the operating mechanisms of major negative drivers threatening biodiversity explains the biological principles of nature conservation, principles of monitoring, and core methods of conservation research on species populations; characterizes the main habitat types and their conservation management approaches is familiar with the key milestones in the historical development of nature conservation both in the Czech Republic and globally, and explains the role of key legislative instruments and international conventions in nature and landscape protection describes the mechanisms of both general and special territorial and species protection pursuant to Act No. 114/1992 Coll.; explains the principles and significance of the European Natura 2000 network using specific examples understands the fundamental system of state and public administration of nature conservation in the Czech Republic, as well as the roles of specialized/expert institutions, commercial entities, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs); explains the importance of public awareness, communication, and public participation in nature and landscape conservation distinguishes expert findings and scientifically sound information from unsubstantiated claims when interpreting nature conservation issues; recognizes the importance of expertise, working with reliable sources, and responsible communication of professional topics

Assessment methods and criteria
Mark, Oral exam, Written exam

The course is completed by a written examination. If fewer than five students are registered for a particular examination date, the written examination may be replaced by an oral examination. In the case of a borderline written-examination score (e.g. between grades A and B or E and F), the student may, upon request, take an additional oral examination in order to improve the result.
